Selling a car or trading it in has always been a bittersweet undertaking for me. It feels like I spent all this time in this vehicle, taken road trips with my boys in it and have had a whole part of my life played out while owning this car! But now, it’s time to move forward. I was asked by one of the curious folks at Thornton Road Hyundai how I knew it was time to trade in (or trade up!). Figuring out the best time to sell your car is easier than you may think:
Evaluate How Much You’re Spending At the Mechanic
It got to the point where my mechanic would expect to see me every week or two, so he would have a big pot of coffee brewing so I could sit down and relax while he checked out my car. I even had my own permanent mug there – true story! When I started to tally up what I’d paid him, it was no wonder that I got the fancy coffee instead of the Folgers. I’m sure he could have taken a nice vacation to the Bahamas just from the work on my car. When I saw that a monthly car payment was less than my weekly mechanic visits, I knew it was time to move on.
Check the Odometer
Anything over about 60,000 miles is going to start making the trade-in value of your car drop. If you’re still under 100,000 miles, you’ll probably do fine if you sell privately. With the advances in technology and less of a chance of engine wear, the mileage isn’t as big of a factor as it used to be. However, dealerships do take it seriously. If you’re planning on trading in for a new Hyundai in Atlanta, just be aware of your mileage.
Consider the Pros and Cons if the Car Is Paid Off
This can be a dealbreaker. If you owe more on your car than what you can get for it, you may not want to be stuck in that hole. Paying off a car you no longer own while paying the additional amount on a new car is a bummer. ou may want to pay it down and deal with the mechanics bills for a bit longer. If it’s paid in full, the world is your oyster! Sell, trade-in, or keep your car – you have more choices, like the 2015 Hyundai SUV lineup!
There are other things to ponder, but taking these into deliberation will help you make the best choice.
